Labor Day – A Celebration of the American Worker

The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. The observance included a street parade that exhibited “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor unions”, followed with a festival for the workers and their families.

Here we are, 134 years later, still celebrating the social and economic achievements of American workers, maybe not with parades, but with picnics and gatherings where we connect to appreciate the hard work and pride of our industrious efforts.

That’s why it’s important to Domtar that we make paper here, in North America. Did you know that every 100 mill jobs provide an additional 325 jobs outside of the mill? Domtar has 13 pulp and paper mills, and 13 converting centers (off-site and on-site) throughout North America, contributing billions to local and regional economies.  It’s important to buy local from U.S. manufacturers that make and sell products here in our country. When it comes to your next paper purchase be sure to ask yourself “where did this paper come from?” Someone’s job could depend on it.

Just as Domtar is proud of all its hardworking employees who make a difference in our company and communities, there are many large and small companies who are equally as proud and thankful for their workers.  To all American workers enjoy your well-deserved day off. Your strength has contributed to the prosperity and well-being of our country.
