When selecting stock for your next print job, review the published product specifications and product guarantees carefully. Information is readily available for basic paper properties key to the aesthetic value of your printed piece. Product guarantees will include performance attributes tied to the intended applications of the product. When we talk about intended applications, we are referring to the “typical” end use, and not necessarily the way a product ultimately is utilized.
Paper manufacturers design grades of paper that are optimized for specific functionality. For example, copier papers are designed so they will not curl when exposed to high temperatures in laser printers; envelope papers need strength attributes that will keep them from cracking at folded edges; offset papers need uniform printing surfaces with sufficient strength to prevent picking.
All papers have multiple design features that are optimized to consistently provide necessary and expected functionality. For example, Laser Forms Bond (LFB) papers utilized for printing forms (i.e. billing statements, credit card applications, etc.) will require features that are different than papers utilized for commercial offset applications (i.e. brochures, marketing collateral, et.). Although a customer may find that offset “usually” works in his forms applications, offset is not designed with the same curl control, moisture targeting or electrical properties as LFB. It is also not designed with the same ink hold out or density optimization of a grade designed to print on web inkjet presses.
Paper selection is critical to the functionality of the stock both in the printing and post-print processes. Although many papers will “work” in offset, toner, inkjet, etc. their specific attributes many not be optimized and therefore functionality may not be guaranteed. The right paper for the right application will provide you with the consistent print quality and post-processing . Why settle for stock that will work “most of the time” when there are products designed specifically for your application!
