As someone with a design background, few things are more inspiring for me than flipping through a regional design awards book. Don’t get me wrong; I love hearing about Sagmeister’s latest project as much as anyone. There’s just something very stimulating and refreshing about a regional design community that bands together in order to celebrate their own local graphic design talent.
In the case of The Advertising Club of Edmonton, local graphic design talent has been celebrated for over 37 years with the annual ACE Awards. This year, the ACE Awards Book was designed by Starburst Creative and printed by McCallum Printing Group. At Domtar, we’re incredibly honored that Lynx® Opaque Ultra was used as the canvas to display such amazing work.
Here’s what Brenna Voogd, Studio Director at Starburst Creative, had to say about the project:
As the creative sponsor for our region’s annual advertising awards, Starburst created the show's concept as well as all the printed collateral associated with the judging process and the awards gala. The winners book is the final, key piece of the event. The book that is produced every year is anticipated by the advertising, design, communications and media industries and is added to the collection of winners books that have been produced over the course of the show’s 37-year history. We wanted to create a book that would be most appreciated by people who know and understand good design.
This year’s winners book had a clean, refined layout in order to let the winning work speak for itself. However, we did take advantage of different techniques in order to give the book a sleek, elemental feel. The book was printed on 100lb Astrolite Bright White cover and Domtar 80lb Lynx Opaque Smooth text by McCallum Printing Group. Separating different sections, we used full floods of color and on the cover we did a double hit of black ink in order to achieve the deep, rich black we were looking for. We also did an aqueous, uncoated coating throughout the piece and embossed both the front and back covers. The final piece was 9” x 11.75” and was 120 pages + cover, perfect bound. The binding was done by Atlas Book Bindery and the cover embossing was done by The Finish Line.
The final product was a beautiful book that we were proud to share with our colleagues and the industry as a whole.
